We think this is a delicious recipe for
phytonutrient-rich brownies. As you may already know,
phytonutrients are those components of plants that have potent health-promoting benefits. As a diverse group, phytonutrients generally have anti-oxidant benefits,
anti-inflammatory effects, and they help reduce the risk for
cancer and cardiovascular disease.
Anything you can do to include more
phytonutrients in your diet is generally a good thing--whether
this is eating more fruits and vegetables, taking concentrated
supplement powders made from organic vegetables such as our PhytoGreens Powder and
eating phytonutrient-dense foods such as dark chocolate,
honey,
olive oil,
green teas and garlic.
We have created two different versions of these
"green brownies" for you to try. Within either variety,
you can of course make alterations as desired. The main
difference in our two recipes is the type of chocolate/cocoa
that is used. People with a real sweet tooth or who are
making these as a snack or appetizer for friends will probably
want to use our Barry Callebaut gourmet chocolates for the
"epicurean version", while people who have tamed the sweet tooth
might prefer to use our fair-trade cocoa powder which is much
less sweet ("the Spartan version") and which can be "custom
sweetened" with the addition of honey.
Also, you might notice in the photo that these brownies were
pan-seared in olive oil and topped with a sprinkling of coarse sea salt
and cinnamon; this might sound odd
at first, but trust us the oil gives a great texture and the
sea salt really brings out a wonderful dimension of the chocolates!
This oil + salt step is completely optional!
Adding our organic
cinnamon powder to the recipe can help tone-down the
PhytoGreens Powder for people not accustomed to it's flavor.
Adding cinnamon also helps to bring out the taste of the
chocolate.
*We've found that adding
cinnamonhelps to calm the intense
taste of the PhytoGreens.
Preparation:
Blend all (except honey) in food
processor until a medium fine grind. Drizzle honey while blending
mixture until it reaches a packable consistency. Pack mixture in an 8" X
8" brownie pan and cool in refrigerator until set. Cut into bars. Enjoy
a healthful treat!
Almonds--almonds are also loaded with fiber and phytonutrients
that provide anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective benefits.
Prunes--prunes are well known as a source of fiber and are
"king of the mountain" when it comes to antioxidant power. Prunes
have the absolute highest oxygen-radical absorbance capacity (ORAC)
of any fruit or vegetable.
PhytoGreens--our PhytoGreens
powder is made from organic vegetables and contains a full day's
supply of ORAC to protect your body from harmful free radicals.
